All three <em>doshas<\/em> play a role in menstruation with the menstrual cycle showing imbalances in the doshas long before they show up in other systems (1). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table><thead><tr><th><em>Dosha<\/em><\/th><th>Elements<\/th><th>Responsibility<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><em>Vata<\/em><\/td><td>Air and water<\/td><td>Movement<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Pitta<\/em><\/td><td>Fire and water<\/td><td>Transformation and metabolism<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Kapha<\/em><\/td><td>Water and earth<\/td><td>Nourishment and structure<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Table 1 (3)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ayurveda the body is composed of seven <em>dhatus <\/em>(tissues layers) whose function is to provide support and nourishment (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After food and water is consumed, provided that <em>agni <\/em>(digestive fire) is strong, it is digested and transformed into a very fine nourishing essence called <em>ahara rasa<\/em>. If <em>agni <\/em>is weak food is unable to be digested properly so <em>ama <\/em>(toxins) may form (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first <em>dhatu<\/em>, <em>Rasa <\/em>(plasma), is formed from this essence. <em>Rasa dhatu<\/em> doesn\u2019t just build itself but also provides nourishment for the succeeding <em>dhatu<\/em>. This process is repeated by each <em>dhatu <\/em>with the essence become more refined and potent as it passes through the layers (6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last layer is <em>shukra<\/em>, the reproductive tissues. <em>Shukra <\/em>is considered the highest, most refined product of the body. <em>Shukra <\/em>is the sperm and ovum. <em>Shukra<\/em> is used as the name for sperm and <em>Artava <\/em>for the ovum. It Is the nutrient transport system of the body delivering nourishment and energy to every cell in the body and removing wastes. As <em>rasa dhatu<\/em> is formed it produces <em>Upadhatus <\/em>(by-products) of <em>stanya <\/em>(lactating tissue) and <em>rajah <\/em>(menstruation) (6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rakta dhatu<\/em>, the blood layer is also part of the menstrual flow which helps to release excess <em>pitta <\/em>(6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being the first two <em>dhatus<\/em>, <em>Rasa <\/em>and <em>Rakta <\/em>are the first to be vitiated by imbalances within the <em>doshas <\/em>and are easily weakened by wrong food, incorrect lifestyle and stress (7). As a result, they can quickly change in consistency and quality which is why a woman\u2019s menstrual cycle can reveal so much about her health (11).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-accordion ugb-accordion ugb-a2bc58e ugb-accordion--v2 ugb-accordion--design-plain ugb-main-block\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><style>.ugb-a2bc58e .ugb-accordion__title{font-size:26px !important}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__item\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__heading\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\"><h2 class=\"ugb-accordion__title\">How does menstruation work?<\/h2><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" class=\"ugb-accordion__arrow\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\"><path d=\"M16.7 3.3L10 10 3.3 3.4 0 6.7l10 10v-.1l10-9.9z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><div class=\"ugb-accordion__content\" role=\"region\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__content-inner\">\n<p>In Ayurveda the menstrual cycle is <em>Rutuchakra<\/em>. Straight after menstruation <em>kapha <\/em>governs regeneration and growth as the endometrium starts to thicken. During this phase <em>kapha<\/em>\u2019s levels increase to its peak of aggravation called <em>Kapha prakopa<\/em>. <em>Pitta <\/em>starts to increase in the latter half of <em>rutukala <\/em>while <em>vata <\/em>remains at a normal level (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this phase woman feel the essence of <em>kapha <\/em>with the juiciness, glow and feeling at peace. <em>Rutukala <\/em>finishes with ovulation (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Rutavateta kala<\/em>: Luteal phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This stage is dominated by <em>pitta<\/em>. As <em>pitta <\/em>increases to <em>pitta prakopa<\/em>, <em>kapha <\/em>decreases. <em>Pitta <\/em>acts mainly through the <em>rakta dhatu<\/em> (blood tissue layer) within the endometrium which becomes more enlarged with blood vessels in preparation for a fertilized egg. As this phase comes to an end, <em>vata <\/em>starts to increase (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Rajakala<\/em>: Menstrual phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the last phase which occurs if there isn\u2019t a fertilized egg. <em>Vata<\/em> increase to its aggravating level, <em>Vata prakopa<\/em>, triggering the menstrual flow to begin (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Apana vayu<\/em>, a sub-<em>dosha<\/em> of <em>vata <\/em>governs downward movement and elimination. The downward movement of this force is what enables the free flow of menstrual blood (6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <em>vata<\/em> is out of balance, then the flow of <em>apana vayu<\/em> will be disturbed. Without the grounding of <em>apana vayu <\/em>many disturbances can occur in the pelvic region such as pain, scanty flow and constipation (6).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-accordion ugb-accordion ugb-fb87bdd ugb-58e400e ugb-accordion--v2 ugb-accordion--design-plain ugb-main-block\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><style>.ugb-58e400e .ugb-accordion__title{font-size:26px !important}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__item\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__heading\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\"><h2 class=\"ugb-accordion__title\">Understanding the root<\/h2><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" class=\"ugb-accordion__arrow\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\"><path d=\"M16.7 3.3L10 10 3.3 3.4 0 6.7l10 10v-.1l10-9.9z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><div class=\"ugb-accordion__content\" role=\"region\"><div class=\"ugb-accordion__content-inner\">\n<p>According to the classical texts on Ayurveda, a healthy cycle has the following qualities (4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Occurs once a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is free of pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is free of bloating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is free of irritability, depression or mood swings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does not stain clothing (sign of <em>ama<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does not have a foul odour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has an amount of four <em>anjalees <\/em>(one <em>anjalee <\/em>is the amount of liquid that fits in to one cupped hand)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a free flow without spotting before the full flow, and with little spotting afterwards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most menstrual issues are related to a dysfunction of <em>vata dosha<\/em> usually from the sub-<em>dosha apana vayu<\/em> that coordinates the release of menstruation (9). As <em>vata <\/em>is the <em>dosha <\/em>that moves it can cause <em>pitta <\/em>and <em>kapha <\/em>to become imbalanced (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7740\" style=\"width:587px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-scaled.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-scaled.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/i.herbalreality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/21123722\/woman-field-hay-meadow-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Vata<\/em> vitiated menstrual flow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Vata<\/em>\u2019s qualities are dry, light, cold, rough, subtle and mobile (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <em>vata <\/em>increases and penetrates the <em>artava vaha srota<\/em> (menstrual channel) and uterus, its cold, dry and rough qualities cause the blood vessels to constrict. <em>Vata<\/em>\u2019s dryness depletes <em>rasa <\/em>and <em>rakta dhatu<\/em> which reduces the nourishment received by the endometrial lining. This results in lighter flow with even cessation of menstrual flow (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ayurveda the cause of <em>udavartini <\/em>(painful periods) is due to vitiated <em>vata <\/em>or blockages in the free flow of <em>apana vayu<\/em> due to the suppression of natural urges. As a result, <em>apana vayu <\/em>moves upwards instead of downwards causing severe pain. The pain subsides after discharge of menstrual blood (8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Pitta<\/em> vitiated flow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pitta<\/em>\u2019s qualities are oily, sharp, hot, light, foul smelling, mobile and fluid (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pitta<\/em> resides in the blood bringing heat and fluidity to the blood so that it flows with ease. In excess, <em>pitta <\/em>seeks to be released through the blood which can cause heavy bleeding. The excess heat brings irritation and swelling in the body such as tender, swollen breasts, increased body temperature and headaches (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Kapha <\/em>vitiated flow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kapha<\/em>\u2019s qualities are oily, cold, heavy, slimy, slow, smooth, and stable (6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These qualities in excess contribute towards stagnation. As stagnation builds up, blockages and obstruction occur especially in the <em>rasa dhatu<\/em>. This gives rise to feelings of bloating and water retention during the pre-menstrual and menstrual period. As the blockage gets stronger the tissues start to overgrow so require more blood vessels to supply this growth. Kumari exerts a special action on the blood and <em>pitta <\/em>organs. It is very cooling and cleansing removing <em>ama <\/em>from the digestive system and rekindling <em>agni<\/em>. The longer the use of kumari the more the <em>dhatu-agni <\/em>are rekindled. Kumari is often used with other herbs as <em>anupana<\/em>, the vehicle to direct the herbs to the reproductive system (11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Ashwagandha (<em>Withania somniferum<\/em>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbalreality.com\/herb\/ashwagandha\/\" data-type=\"herb\" data-id=\"276\">Ashwagandha<\/a> is the best regulator of apana vayu, which governs the lower abdomen, ensuring its downward movement. It is excellent for menstrual issues associated with excess <em>vata <\/em>such as painful periods, scanty and irregular periods. It is a wonderfully nourishing nerve tonic for <em>vata<\/em> improving resilience to emotional and physical stress. This is a popular Ayurvedic tea to help improve <em>agni <\/em>and assimilation. (11)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Ingredients<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon cumin seeds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon coriander seeds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon fennel seeds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 cups of water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring to boil and then simmer for 10 minutes. Keep in a thermos to sip throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Rest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Menstruation is a time of cleansing. Wastes are moving down and out of the body which requires a lot of energy. It is also important to rest as <em>apana vayu<\/em> becomes imbalanced by upwards movements of things such as excessive talking or thinking, excessive movement, sex and even <em>pranayama <\/em>and yoga. These are best left to non-menstruating days (11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Reflection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking time while resting to reflect on the menstrual cycle to identify any imbalances and to start correcting these will prevent imbalances from moving deeper into the physiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Castor oil pack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbalreality.com\/herb\/castor\/\" data-type=\"herb\" data-id=\"1955\">Castor oil packs<\/a> break up <em>kapha <\/em>accumulations and help drive out toxins. It also has a calming effect on <em>vata<\/em>. A warm castor oil pack placed on the abdomen is very effective at balancing <em>apana vayu<\/em>. For excess <em>pitta <\/em>castor oil can be replaced with coconut oil as it is cooling. Do not do a castor oil pack during menstruation (9). After starting castor oil packs, it is common for the next menstruation or two to be heavier and more painful as stagnation is cleared from the uterus. The skin is the largest organ of the body. Massaging with warm oil stimulates the <em>dhatu <\/em>layers to prevent toxins from accumulating and helps toxins drain to the gut for elimination. The warm oil calms the nervous system. Sesame seed oil is one of the best remedies for balancing <em>vata <\/em>and is beneficial to all seven <em>dhatus<\/em>. Sesame seed oil is wonderful for reducing stress and tension. Regular use can help prevent period pain. <em>Abhyanga <\/em>should not be carried out during menstruation (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\"><em>Nasya<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Nasya <\/em>is the administration of herbal oils though the nose which help to clear accumulated toxins in the head and neck region. This is useful for pitta premenstrual headaches (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meditation helps to clear mental and emotional <em>ama <\/em>and prevent the build-up of more. There are many forms of meditation whether it is sitting peacefully and quietening the mind, visualisation, mantra chanting, walking meditations in nature or <em>pranayama <\/em>breath exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Yoga<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoga is good for the spine, digestive organs and helps to move stagnation out of the body. It also helps to clear the mind and feel grounded (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Hydrate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During menstruation, just like any cleanse, hydration is very important to help with the elimination of wastes. Sipping warm water throughout the day helps the body to flush out wastes. Including good oils daily such as ghee or flaxseed oil throughout the menstrual cycle helps to counteract <em>vata<\/em>\u2019s dryness and helps keep <em>rasa dhatu<\/em> nourished (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:21px\">Don\u2019t suppress natural urges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The body is constantly working to keep us in a state of balance. Suppressing natural urges, which are often a way for the body to eliminate wastes, results in vitiated <em>vata <\/em>and upward flowing <em>apana vayu<\/em>.
